Does your running change after an Achilles Tendon Rupture?
Most athletes, particularly runners, place a huge importance on a well-functioning Achilles Tendon. The tendon’s important role is to provide sufficient plantar flexor power in running activities. Over the past thirty years, there has been dramatic increase in incidence of AT rupture, primarily in the athletic population
Evidence has been reported that individuals with a history of Achilles Tendon rupture have decreased ankle joint proprioception, decreased plantar flexor muscle volume, increased Achilles Tendon length and affected Achilles Tendon stiffness.
A study by Jandacka D., et al (2017) recruited 22 participants and looked at the running kinetics and kinematics of their ankle, knee and hip joints using a high-speed motion capture system.
Results of this study showed the Achilles Tendon Rupture group to have reduced ankle range of motion during the stance phase, an overextended knee during initial contact and increased affected knee range of motion.
The main point to take from these results is that there is a significant compensation mechanism taking place following an AT rupture, which affects not only the ankle joint but the knee and hip joints too.
