Sciatica – what it is and what it is not

Blog post produced and written by HCPC Registered Physiotherapist Lewis Crouch, member of our Tufnell Park Sports Therapy/Physiotheray Team. Lewis talks here about how Sciatica and gives a quick go to piece should you ever think you may have it or not.

Sciatica can be a very worrying condition but it is worth noting that it quite rare and more often than not the pain you are feeling is muscular related.  Please ensure you get checked by a medical professional at your earliest convenience to rule out this condition.

Sciatica is a condition which causes pain in the lower back as well as the legs/buttocks. This occurs due to irritation of the sciatic and surrounding lumbo-sacral nerves ? ⁣

➭ The sciatic nerve can become irritated in 3 main ways: a herniated disc, pinched nerve & Spondylolisthesis can all cause this. Other causes include tumours, pelvic fractures or Piriformis syndrome ?⁣

➭ Common symptoms of Sciatica include lower back pain, leg/buttock pain, tingling and/or numbness in the lower limb, etc. These symptoms usually worsen with aggravating activities ??‍♂️⁣

➭ Please note that constant tingling/numbness in both legs, numbness in the groin area, bladder/bowel dysfunction and motor weakness may signify the presence of Cauda-Equina syndrome which requires emergency intervention, although this is rare!
