    Osteoarthritis….what can you do to help?

    Jason Dodd

    Blog post produced and written by Clinic Manager and Sports Injury Specialist Jason Dodd.

    Last week I spoke about Osteoarthritis and how to keep pain at bay.  If you missed it then you can check out our advice here via the link.  This week I wanted to show some quick things you may wish to consider which may help your pain in the long term.

    One thing that often gets missed when discussing Osteoarthritis is ‘other health factors’.  For example, smoking has been proven to be a huge contributor to inflammation within joints and we now know that inflammation is one of the leading influences of Osteoarthritis.  Those who suffer from Rheumatoid arthritis are often asked to immediately cease smoking to get the greatest gains in the shortest time frame.

    Other health factors though can include far reaching ideas.  In a recent study, turmeric was shown to have positive effects on those who suffered from joint inflammation.  It has also been proven in a recent study that massage and aromatherapy can have positive outcomes for those who suffer from osteoarthritis.  The paper concludes;

    The use of both massage therapy and aromatherapy is recommended for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Interventions should be prolonged for at least 6 months in patients so their effects appear on the patient.

    The general point we are making here is that, although you may be suffering from something such as Osteoarthritis, it does not mean all is lost.  There are many interventions that can be tried and tested.  The key is in finding which one works for you and enables you to function to the best of your ability in everyday life.
