Blog post produced and written by Strength and Conditioning Coach and Injury Specialist Monika Smiechowska. Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis Elbiw) – not just in Tennis Players!
Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is commonly known as tennis elbow as it affects 50% of tennis players. However… only 10% of patients with tennis elbow play tennis!
Tennis elbow usually presents as pain or discomfort felt on the outer side of the elbow (often felt on the bony prominence). The pain is usually generated from the wrist muscle tendons and often felt when they are in use.
Tennis Elbow Treatment
Current research regarding treatment of LE is very conflicting. There are many studies that have looked into various modalities however results are not one sided.
Based on current research, the most common treatment for LE consists of:
- Rest and anti-inflammatory drugs for initial stages
- Joint mobilisation (Mill’s manipulation)
- Eccentric epicondylar muscle strengthening
- Electrotherapy: including shockwave, electrical nerve stimulation, ultrasound
- Orthotics
- Corticosteroid injections
It is important to know that every individual is different and what may have worked for someone else may not work for you in the same way. Because of this, it is imperative to work along side an experienced therapist who can guide you along the way.
