Why Prevention Matters: Reducing Injury Risk Through Targeted Programmes

Get Expert Tips from our highly experienced therapists  to Boost Your Recovery

At our clinic, we’re strong believers in the saying “prevention is better than cure.” While we’re proud of the hands-on treatment and rehab we provide, the ultimate goal is to keep our clients injury-free in the first place.

Whether you’re an athlete, a desk-based worker, or someone juggling a busy family life, building strength, mobility, and resilience into your body can significantly reduce your risk of injury. But don’t just take our word for it — there’s a growing body of research proving the power of preventative programmes.

    What Are Preventative Programmes?

Preventative programmes are structured exercise-based routines designed to enhance strength, coordination, balance, and neuromuscular control. They often include warm-up strategies, movement drills, and specific exercises tailored to common injury patterns.

These programmes can be especially powerful when integrated into your weekly routine — not just when pain appears. They work proactively to improve biomechanical function and movement efficiency, making your body more resilient to physical stress.

    Evidence That Prevention Works

    1. The FIFA 11+ Programme

One of the most well-known and well-researched examples is the FIFA 11+, a complete warm-up programme developed by the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Centre to reduce football injuries.

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that teams who performed the FIFA 11+ at least twice a week had a 30-50% reduction in overall injuries compared to teams who did not use the programme (Soligard et al., 2008). It’s particularly effective in reducing knee and ankle injuries, which are common in sports involving cutting and pivoting movements.

    1. Neuromuscular Training in Youth Sports

Another meta-analysis published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine looked at various injury prevention programmes and found that neuromuscular training significantly reduced lower extremity injury risk, particularly in younger athletes.

The results showed a 66% reduction in ACL injuries in female athletes who participated in preventative neuromuscular programmes (Sugimoto et al., 2015). The exercises typically included plyometrics, balance, and strength training — many of which can be adapted for general populations too.

    1. Occupational and Lifestyle Injury Prevention

Preventative strategies aren’t just for athletes. A systematic review in Occupational Medicine found that ergonomic interventions, physical activity programmes, and postural education significantly reduced musculoskeletal disorders in office workers — especially in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

When individuals engaged in proactive strengthening and mobility routines, the incidence of work-related musculoskeletal issues decreased by up to 60% (Van Eerd et al., 2016).

Prevention in Practice: How We Help

At the clinic, we offer preventative care programmes tailored to your lifestyle and risk profile. These may include:

    • Injury screening and movement assessments
    • Strengthening programmes for knees, hips, shoulders, and spine
    • Sports-specific warm-up routines (like FIFA 11+ for footballers)
    • Postural training for sedentary workers
    • Balance and control drills to improve joint stability
    • Education on form, technique, and daily movement patterns

By committing to a preventative approach, you’re not just avoiding injury — you’re improving performance, increasing longevity in your sport or profession, and investing in your long-term wellbeing.
