    Strength and Conditioning Benefits:

There are a wide variety of reasons why undertaking a good and thorough strength and conditioning programme can help benefit you.  At Bodylogics we have broken it down into 10 main reasons.

    Injury Prevention

Any S&C programme must focus on the movement patterns of the individual.  This is carried out to ensure you do not injure yourself during any of your lifts.

We all have something inside us called proprioception.  Proprioception is where you have an awareness of your body and how it moves.  By improving your technique when carrying out movements you inevitably improve your proprioception which ultimately leads to reduced rates of injury..

    Improved Performance

Ultimately, we all crave for better performance in everything we do.  Whether that be at an elite level of sport or in our day to day lives of completing tasks more efficiently. Strength and conditioning helps achieve this.  Our programmes are based on scientific methods which are backed by years of research into the human body.

    Enhanced General Health

We are sometimes guilty of not looking after our general health, this is where strength and conditioning can play a big part.  Take osteoarthritis for example.  This disease of the bones has been attributed to a lack of loading on the joints for a number of years.  By loading the joints, through weight training, you can delay or prevent the onset of this disease occurring.

    Strengthen bones

Strength training doesn’t just increase the strength of our muscles. In fact, there are numerous articles and research papers into the benefits of strength training improving bone density. An article published by Harvard Medical School on the effect of strength training on bone health explains:

“Numerous studies have shown that strength training can play a role in slowing bone loss, and several show it can even build bone. This is tremendously useful to help offset age-related declines in bone mass. Activities that put stress on bones can nudge bone-forming cells into action. That stress comes from the tugging and pushing on bone that occurs during strength training (as well as weight-bearing aerobic exercises like walking or running). The result is stronger, denser bones.”

    Improved posture

Although we do not like to admit it, posture can play a part in the pain we feel.  There are many factors to this, including the psychological side of things but from a biological sense, strength and conditioning will develop muscle strength which will help muscles to do their job in supporting the skeleton.

    Improved mood

It is no secret that carrying out exercise can help to release hormones which make us happy. With any strength and conditioning programme you can expect to see results.  That may be improved body shape, reduced pain in day to day movement or improved athletic performance.  Whichever it is though you are sure to feel good about it!

    Increased Muscle Mass and Metabolism

Muscle needs energy, it’s a fact!  The more muscle you have then the more energy will be burned.  Your metabolism is responsible for the speed in which you convert food into energy and use it.  Exercise has been shown to help improve metabolism in numerous studies.  So if we combine exercise which requires energy, with building muscles which require energy then we are fast tracking ourselves to the ultimate energy burning human!

    Exercise Can Become More Enjoyable

You may find that movement and exercise is painful at the moment.  It could be due to your technique or the fact your body’s joints are unable to cope with the load (demand) you are placing on them.  By improving your overall strength and conditioning you will find exercise becomes more enjoyable because you are able to move better, perform better and be in much less pain.

    Faster Recovery After Injury

If anyone claims they can stop you getting injured then be very wary!  It is impossible to ‘STOP’ people getting injured.  We can reduce or minimise the chances but that is about as far as we can go.  What is unique though about strength and conditioning is that it can help you RECOVER faster from injury.  Sounds crazy we know, but it is proven in science and in the literature.  By strengthening a certain area you are encouraging the laying down of muscle fibres to the injured site which ultimately are needed for injury repair.  These new muscle fibres, once laid down, become strong quick due to the load they are being placed under.  This increase strength then leads to a faster recovery and you getting back to doing what you love most.

As you can see, strength and conditioning benefits so many areas of not just sport, but everyday life. Incorporating some of the principles into your life can really make a difference to how you perform, move and live.
