Book an AppointmentExpert, Hands-On Runner’s Knee Care
A sharp or burning pain on the outer side of the knee, especially during running or cycling, is often a sign of iliotibial band syndrome, commonly known as Runner’s Knee. Our specialist physiotherapists treat it across our four North London clinics.
Runner’s Knee is one of the most common overuse injuries in runners and cyclists, and it responds well to the right approach. Rather than focusing on the painful spot alone, our hands-on treatment addresses the wider causes so the problem resolves and stays resolved.

What Is Runner’s Knee?
The iliotibial band is a thick band of connective tissue that runs down the outer side of the thigh, from the hip to just below the knee. It helps to stabilise the knee during movement, particularly when you are running or cycling.
Runner’s Knee develops when this band becomes irritated where it passes over the outer part of the knee, usually as a result of repetitive bending and straightening. It is classically an overuse injury, and the pain tends to build with activity rather than appearing suddenly.
Common Causes
Runner’s Knee rarely comes from a single factor. The contributing causes we see most often include:
- A rapid increase in running or cycling volume
- Weakness in the hip and gluteal muscles that control the leg
- Running on cambered surfaces or always in the same direction on a track
- Worn or unsuitable footwear
- Biomechanical factors affecting how the leg moves during activity
Symptoms of Runner’s Knee
The condition tends to follow a fairly typical pattern, which may include:
- Pain on the outer side of the knee that builds during activity
- A sharp or burning sensation, often at a predictable point in a run
- Pain that eases with rest but returns when you resume activity
- Tenderness on the outer part of the knee
- Discomfort that can also be felt further up the outer thigh
How We Treat Runner’s Knee
The key to treating Runner’s Knee successfully is to look beyond the painful knee and address why the band became irritated in the first place. Our assessment examines your hip and knee strength, your movement patterns and your training, because these factors usually hold the answer.
Hands-on therapy helps to settle the local irritation and ease tension in the surrounding tissues, while a personalised exercise programme builds strength and control in the hip and gluteal muscles. Strengthening these muscles is often the single most important element of a lasting recovery.
We also work with you on training load and technique, helping you return to running or cycling at a pace the body can adapt to. By correcting the underlying causes rather than only calming the symptoms, we help you get back to your sport with a much lower risk of recurrence.
Your Care May Include
- Hip & knee strength assessment
- Hands-on manual therapy
- Progressive hip & glute strengthening
- Movement & control retraining
- Training-load & technique advice
- Structured return-to-sport plan

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Runner’s Knee Caused by a Tight IT Band?
It is often described that way, but weakness and control in the hip and gluteal muscles usually play a larger role than tightness alone. This is why strengthening, rather than just stretching or rolling, tends to be the most effective treatment.
Can I Keep Running With Runner’s Knee?
Some activity can often continue, but it needs to be managed carefully to avoid prolonging the problem. We will advise on how to adjust your training so the irritation settles while you maintain as much fitness as possible.
How Long Does Runner’s Knee Take to Recover?
With the right approach, many people improve over a number of weeks. The timeline depends on how long the problem has been present and how consistently the strengthening programme and training adjustments are followed.
Do I Need a Referral to Be Seen?
No referral is needed to book with Bodylogics, and you can arrange an appointment directly at any of our four North London clinics. If you intend to use private health insurance, your provider may request a referral first, so it is sensible to confirm with them beforehand.
