What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back before travelling through the buttock and down each leg.
Sciatica is not a diagnosis itself but a symptom of an underlying problem. The most common cause is a herniated disc in the lower back, although spinal arthritis, narrowing around the nerves (spinal stenosis) and other conditions can also irritate the sciatic nerve.
The symptoms often affect one side of the body and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that makes everyday activities difficult.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica symptoms vary from person to person but commonly include:
- Pain travelling from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg
- Sharp, burning or shooting pain
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Muscle weakness in the affected leg
- Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing or sneezing
- Difficulty walking or standing comfortably
Will It Get Better Without Surgery?
In most cases, yes.
The majority of people with sciatica improve over several weeks to a few months with conservative treatment. Surgery is only required for a relatively small number of people whose symptoms fail to improve or who develop significant nerve compression.
For most people, physiotherapy and acupuncture are safe and effective ways to reduce symptoms and support recovery.
How We Treat Sciatica at Bodylogics
Every course of treatment begins with a thorough assessment to determine what's causing your sciatica and whether any further investigations are needed.
Once we've identified the source of your symptoms, treatment focuses on reducing pain, restoring movement and helping the irritated nerve recover.
Your treatment programme may include:
- Hands-on physiotherapy to improve movement and reduce pain
- Acupuncture where clinically appropriate to help manage pain and muscle tension
- Individualised exercises to improve flexibility, strength and spinal control
- Advice on managing symptoms during everyday activities
- Education about your condition to build confidence and reduce fear of movement
- Progressive rehabilitation to help prevent recurrence
If we believe further investigations or specialist input would be beneficial, we'll work closely with your GP or consultant to ensure you receive the right care.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The most common cause is a herniated disc in the lower back, although spinal stenosis, arthritis and other spinal conditions can also be responsible.
Should I Rest if I Have Sciatica?
Complete bed rest is usually not recommended. Gentle movement and remaining as active as your symptoms allow generally promote recovery. We will advise you on the right balance of activity and rest based on your individual condition.
How Long Does Sciatica Last?
Many people notice significant improvement within several weeks, although recovery varies depending on the underlying cause and severity. Following a personalised rehabilitation programme can help improve recovery and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.
Do I Need a Referral to Be Seen?
No. You can book directly with Bodylogics without a GP referral. If you are planning to use private health insurance, it is worth checking with your provider beforehand, as some insurers require a referral.
Which Bodylogics Clinic Should I Visit?
