The job of an Osteopath is to not just find out what is wrong but why, so that we can make sure your pain doesn’t come back. This is never more apparent than when working with complaints due to running.

The issues runners experience are quite unique as there are so many things to take into consideration. What surface are they running on? Has it changed recently? Do they wear studs, normal running trainers or bare feet? Are they running on a track? Do they sprint or run long distance? Do they run on the ball of their feet or heel to toe? Does the pain start quite quickly after they start running or after a longer distance? All this is hugely important as it completely alters how the forces transfer through the body as they run, and it affects each person completely differently.

We’ve also found that with runners, the cause and the site of pain are often in completely different places. For example you may be experiencing shin splints, and whilst the pain is around the shin, the cause may be due to poor ankle mechanics, tightness in the calves and hamstrings or even poor force transference from the hip.

This is where our Osteopathy Department comes in. To find out exactly what is going on, we need to take a detailed case history by asking you some of the above questions, and then not just look at the site of the pain, but the whole body so we can tell you exactly what is going wrong and why, and then treat the issue along with giving you a wide range of exercises and advice so that you can get back to running as soon as possible.  Our assessment can sometimes actually improve running economy as it will help shift loads to other areas of the body, therefore allowing you to become much more energy efficient and ultimately faster at your preferred distance.
